Parenting Tips: Discipline
There is absolutely no point in setting rules and boundaries if parents do not follow through on threats when the child breaks the rules. We have all heard a warning like 'if you hit little Jimmy again, I will take you straight home,' only for another whack to poor little Jimmy and the parent still does not take the misbehaving child home.
The message that the child receives is that whatever happens, no consequences ever materialize, so they might as well keep behaving inappropriately. Warnings do not always lead to some sort of punishment, but it does teach the child about ‘cause’ and ‘effect’.
